Welcome Email - The Most Important First Contact
Email Marketing is all about building relationships with your subscribers. For this reason, your first letter, or welcome email, needs to be dynamic!
Your welcome email actually tells your new subscriber whether or not your newsletter is worth their time. I have subscribed to 100’s of newsletters to get an idea of how other list owners operate. One mistake that is extremely common, is the lack of effort being applied to the first email. Here is an example:
Hello Sam,
Thanks for subscribing! You will receive our first issue in a few days.
Thanks,
James
What does that tell your reader? It tells me that I’m not important to the list owner. It also makes me forget that I subscribed to this publication when the first newsletter actually arrives.
Here is a better way to do this…
Hello Sam,
Welcome to the Internet’s premier list building newsletter List Builder Magazine. You are days away from creating a successful email marketing campaign.
By the way Sam, could you do me a huge favor? It won’t take more than 30 seconds. Could you reply to this email and tell me the number one thing you want to learn about email marketing?
I would sure appreciate it!
Here is a link to your download page where I have added some new free gifts. Yes, I like to give stuff away and we do it all the time!
That’s it for now Sam. Thanks again for replying to this email, and enjoy the free gifts.
James
P.S. You can visit our Blog right now to read some of our past articles.
First of all, asking your reader for feedback is a giant step towards building a relationship. In asking Sam what information he needs, I am showing him that I care. If you show your readers you care about their needs, you win!
The second thing I do is “over-deliver” on free stuff. Give away as much as you can. Give them more than you said you would.
And last, but not least, I give them a link to my blog which let’s a new subscriber read some of my articles. If my content is good, my new subscriber will look forward to that first newsletter. The key is to make a new subscriber anxious to hear more from you.
I will be posting a lot more info on this subject soon!
