Why Do Subscribers Opt-In To Your Newsletter?
Why Do Subscribers Opt-In To Your Newsletter? Before I answer this question, let me tell you why they don’t subscribe to your newsletter:
They don’t subscribe to get pitched on products!
It’s time for me to do a little “guru bashing” again! As many of you know, I’ve subscribed to hundreds of newsletters throughout the years. I’ve read some great stuff by some great authors. These authors are usually harder to find. Then there are the guru publishers that are easy to find. Their content is usually nothing more than a sales letter. These newsletters (or junk emails) come out on Tuesday or Thursday like clockwork, they contain affiliate links to the next greatest product, they provide zero value, and you get the same email from all their JV partners because they all have recycled lists!
Another guru tactic is to get yourself a domain name that is your actual name. Then you create a folder called: “recommends”. You can now do this:

That’s all there is to it! Right? Well, not necessarily. People subscribe to these “guru” lists because they want to emulate the success that the guru supposedly has. At first, product offers seem genuine. Many readers will buy into these recommendations because they feel that the author is really trying to help them.
But after awhile…
Being bombarded with product offer after product offer gets old!
There are two main problems with the “guru” mentality:
1. If your name is not recognized as a guru, you are not taken seriously.
2. You will need to constantly find fresh leads to replace the unsubscribes.
I feel that being an authority on a subject is great. Being willing to teach others is downright admirable. If you constantly bombard your readers with sales letters, you will lose their attention quickly. People opt-in to email lists because they seek solutions to problems. If you take the time to provide solutions, you will have a strong list of actual readers.
Remember, you can have a large list of subscribers that hit the delete button when they see your name or…
You can have a list of loyal readers that can’t wait until your next message arrives.
My next post will explain how to create emails that get read.
